Housing confidence is showing signs of softening, though positive sentiment remains high.

ASB says its Housing Confidence Survey for the three months to January implies that last year's resurgence in the housing market will tail off slightly in 2010.

The survey responses show a greater awareness that interest rates will go up this year, with 51% of those surveyed saying they expect rates to be hiked within 12 months.

It also says the strong likelihood of changes to taxes on investment property may also increasingly influence the market.

The survey shows 48% of respondents expect house prices to rise in the next 12 months, while 37% believe now is the best time to buy a house.
