New Zealand's job market finished 2010 on a high with a 5% increase in the number of new jobs listed on an online jobs advertiser.
The growth in the number of new jobs on Seek was an "encouraging" indicator that the employment market would strengthen in 2011, said Seek senior executive Helen Souness.
Canterbury led the way last month for growth in new job ads with a 9.1% increase on Seek.
It was the fourth consecutive month that Canterbury came out at the top, supported by the large reconstruction programmes in the earthquake-hit region.
Seek said the positive outlook for the end of 2010 was reinforced by the ratio between new job ads and the number of applicants per job. The Seek Employment Index (SEI) produced a rise of 2.3% in December.
There was also a huge growth in the construction industry in 2010 with a 78% rise in the number of ads listed since 2009.
The IT and technology industry had a 46% increase, while the figure was 35% in accountancy.
"Many projects and plans for development in these sectors were frozen during the financial crisis, and as a result there were fewer positions advertised for IT and accountancy," Souness said.
"As we continue to move away from the low points of the recession these projects are now beginning to be rolled out and staff have been recruited to implement these."
For the first time last year recruitment agency positions made the list of most sought after employees for December.
