Sydney to Hobart race
A world class marine construction complex in west Auckland is expected to create at least 2,000 new jobs.
Waitakere Properties has been given the green light to build the $80 million facility at Hobsonville near the former air force base.
Marine Industry Association chief executive Peter Busfield says the emphasis will be on building and refitting super yachts.
He says about 20 boat builders are expected to relocate to the site.
But Peter Busfield says there could be another 20 to 40 support companies that provide fittings, services, engineering requirements, painting and other marine services.
He says the complex will take five to 10 years to develop.
Waitakere Properties is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Waitakere City Council.
