Food prices fell 1.3% in February following a 2.1% rise in January, Statistics New Zealand says.
Fruit and vegetables led the downward spiral, falling 3.5% for the month. Meat, poultry and fish were down 2.4% and non-alcoholic beverages were down 1.9%.
Grocery items showed a small decrease of 0.8% while restaurant meals and ready-to-eat foods had no change.
The price of apples fell 26.6% as the new season's crop became more widely available and potatoes were 11.4% cheaper.
For the year to February 2010, food prices rose 0.7%, the lowest annual increase since a 0.4% increase for the year to April 2005.
