New Zealanders' food bills were cheaper in October, falling 1.5% during the month.
The decline was the largest monthly fall in three and a half years, according to Statistics New Zealand's Food Price Index, and follows a 0.7% decline in September and a 0.9% decline in August.
Driving the fall was a 4.6% decline in the price of fruit and vegetables.
Statistics New Zealand says fruit and vegetables typically fall during spring and prices are now 15.5% lower than when they peaked in July.
A 47% decrease in the price of lettuce was one of the biggest downwards contributors in this category.
Cheaper fresh chicken and lamb also helped lower food bills.
Statistics New Zealand says it was the first time in 10 years prices declined across all the five food subgroups of fruit and vegetables, meat, grocery, restaurant meals and ready-to-eat and non alcoholic beverages.
The decline also helped narrow the annual rise in food prices. For the year to October, food prices rose 2% which is the smallest annual increase since May 2006.
However, Statistics New Zealand says food prices are 12.1%
higher than they were two years ago.
