Fonterra is being accused of buying cheap feed at the expense of New Zealand farmers and the environment.

Greenpeace says the dairy giant imported a quarter of the world's palm kernal based animal feed for New Zealand cows last year.

That amounts to 1.1 million tonnes of the kernels.

The group says rainforests in Indonesia and Malaysia were cleared to produce cheap palm oil.

Greenpeace spokesman Simon Boxer says the revelation is a slap in the face of New Zealand grain growers.

He is calling on Fonterra to stop the imports.

Failing that, Greenpeace wants the government to intervene.
