First-day attendance at the national agricultural expo at Mystery Creek slumped 11% to 23,975, organisers say.

But they said Wednesday was also the first wet Fieldays opening in seven years.

The number of exhibitors is similar to last year at over 1,000 exhibitors and near 100% site occupancy on the 98-hectare site.

More than 130,000 visitors attended the event last year and organisers are hoping to see an even bigger turnout this year despite the economic downturn.
