Farmers are hopeful the industry will have the chance to prosper now that the emissions trading scheme is on hold.

National has agreed to a review of the scheme, which has been the subject of heated debate in recent months.

Federated Farmers meat and fibre chair Bruce Wills says the industry was deeply concerned that a methane emission tax included in the legislation would cripple farming.

He says the government's decision to review the scheme takes a weight off farmers' shoulders.

The scheme is unlikely to come into force for at least another year.
