The Northern Employers' and Manufacturers' Association says union calls for employers to cover the cost of swine flu stricken employees is unreasonable.

The Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union (EPMU) on Wednesday said employers should bear the cost of exposure to the H1N1 flu if the exposure was work related.

EPMU secretary Andrew Little said workers who have to be quarantined face significant costs such as loss of allowances and not being able to work a second job.

EMA employment services manager David Lowe employers will do the right thing by providing the agreed levels of paid sick leave and many may well go further "but suggesting it be mandatory is irresponsible".

Health officials have warned that H1N1 flu could potentially infect half of New Zealand's population if a pandemic takes hold, with young people being the most vulnerable.
