Coca-Cola Amatil is set to expand its empire in New Zealand with the proposed acquisition of cordial maker Baker Halls.

The Commerce Commission has cleared the way for the soft drink giant to buy the Auckland-based cordial manufacturing and marketing business.

Baker Halls is currently owned by global food and beverages manufacturer, Old Fashioned Foods.

Commerce Commission chair Paula Rebstock said that the commission was satisfied that the proposed acquisition will not have, or would not be likely to have, the effect of substantially lessening competition.

The Commission says Coca-Cola Amatil will continue to be constrained by existing competition following the acquisition.

Australian-owned Coca-Cola Amatil has the exclusive licence to bottle Coca-Cola beverages in New Zealand. It has five bottling plants and employs around 1,100 people.
