Spending by UK visitors to New Zealand fell 18.6% to $826 million in the year to June from the previous year, while total spending by international visitors fell 2.6%.

International visitors spent $6 billion in the year to June, according to the Ministry of Tourism.

"After nearly a full year in which the New Zealand tourism industry has been impacted upon by the global recession and the worldwide decline in tourism activity, it is reassuring that the impact on tourism expenditure has been limited," said Bruce Bassett, Ministry of Tourism research manager.

The annual decline in spending of 2.6% closely matched the 2.8% fall in international arrivals over the period.

The UK market was hit sharply by the recession.

There was strong growth in arrivals form Australia but people many visited friends and family so spending by them fell 3.3% to $1.6 billion.

Spending by US visitors rose 1.7% to $608 million, though arrivals from this market were soft.

Spending by Chinese visitors increased 28% to $334 million, despite a 13.2% fall in arrivals. This was put down to a boost in the number of long-stay education travellers.

Germany recorded robust expenditure growth of 18.8% to $285 million based on a 3.2% increase in arrivals.
