The Newmarket Business Association is calling on the government to allow tourists to claim back the GST on goods they buy before next year's Rugby World Cup.
The association's CEO Cameron Brewer says it is not uncommon for tourists to turn up with receipts at Auckland airport expecting a GST refund on their major purchases.
New Zealand does not offer such a facility unless it has been pre-arranged with selected retailers who then have to pay 7% of the retail price of the goods to the airport authority.
Brewer says much simpler tourist refund schemes operate
successfully in over 20 countries worldwide.
