The New Zealand business community is being called to put its hand in its pocket, to help pay for the Rugby World Cup.

Organisers have released a new budget, showing a likely deficit on running the event of almost $40 million.

Promoter Gray Bartlett says a lot of the games between minnow countries from Europe and America are likely to lose money.

He says taxpayers should not be funding the losses.

Bartlett says the money should be coming from business, because they are going to benefit immensely, especially those in the tourist sector.

He says the ordinary rate or taxpayer will not see any benefit at all.
