The number of broadband subscribers in New Zealand has jumped 27% to over 1.1 million since last year, according to Statistics New Zealand.

Statistics New Zealand's Internet Service Provider Survey for the year to June shows broadband subscribers made up nearly three-quarters (72%) of all internet subscribers.

Of those subscribers, the number using mobile data cards, cable, or satellite technology to connect to the internet increased by 53% to 220,000.

However, DSL connection (digital subscriber line provided over a local telephone network) was still the most popular way to connect.

Statistics New Zealand says there was also an increase in the number of subscribers using larger data caps. There are now 129,000 subscribers with a data cap over 20GB compared with 15 months ago - a threefold increase.

A cap of 20GB allows a user to watch about 100 hours of streaming video a month.

Most broadband users (49%) had a cap of less than 5GB, though this is showing decline compared with around 60% in previous years.

Over one-third of all broadband subscribers had a data cap between 5GB and 20GB.
