Infratil's Kent International Airport (KIA) at Manston in Britain has been snubbed by a big airline it hoped would switch its long-haul operations to the airport.

The airport management disclosed British Airways World Cargo has decided to retain its hub at Stansted, north of London, rather than relocate to Manston.

New Zealand CEO of KIA Matt Clarke said he was disappointed.

"Like any business that bids for a new contract and is unsuccessful, we are obviously disappointed with this news."

Infratil bought the airport out of receivership 2005.

Clarke said the fact that it was considered alongside Stansted showed how far its reputation in the industry had progressed.

He was still upbeat about attracting more airlines.
