It has long been a favourite in New Zealand glasses but now the classic Kiwi sauvignon blanc is turning heads and opening wallets across the ditch.

According to market researchers Nielsen New Zealand wine sales are up 42% in Australia.

Sauvignon blanc now represents around 30% of white wine sales in Australia - a big change for the previously chardonnay dominant market.

All those Aussie drinkers have also helped New Zealand wine exports to break the $1 billion mark for the first time  last year.
