The recession has bitten retail industry hard this year.

But one clothing company is celebrating the miserable retail climate with a cheeky promotion - the "crap sale".

Route 66 in the Auckland shopping precinct of Newmarket has put three of its staff on toilets on the footpath to advertise its sale.

The store says sales are down on last year, so they could not think of a better word than "crap" to describe their sale.

When the council found out about the stunt, they asked Route 66 to fill out a permit. The shop refused, claiming it is none of the council's business where the toilets are placed.

Further council action looks unlikely, but in the meantime, Saturday's show of bottoms has brought a noticeable boost to the shop's bottomline.
