Silicon Valley technology firm Apple is resigning from the US Chamber of Commerce because of the chamber's opposition to federal government efforts to limit greenhouse gases.

Apple's vice president of worldwide government affairs Catherine Novelli says the company is committed to protecting the environment and its communities and does not agree with the chamber's stance, according to AP (Associated Press).

Apple is attempting to build its environmentally friendly image through the design of more energy efficient products, and recently calculated and published the company's carbon footprint.

According to AP, Apple is the fourth company to leave the chamber over global warming.

It follows last month's departures of utility companies PG&E, PNM and Exelon.
