More than $270 million of Budget money has been allocated to modernising and rebuilding the New Zealand Defence Force.
Defence Minister Phil Goff says $276.4 million over the next four years. He says the funding will be used largely to boost numbers as well as retain existing personnel.
"Funding for recruitment and retention is essential for Defence, like most other large organisation, to be able to attract and retain people ina tight labour market," says Goff.
The Ministry of defence will also continue to purchase and upgrade equipment, such as NH90 helicopters and the P3 Orion fleet. That will be funded from existing the $4 billion long term (2002 - 2012) development plan.
