Gore gets a bad rap. Everyone knows it. Everyone joins in on it. But you know what, I'm a Gore convert. Gore is actually pretty cool.
We arrived in Gore earlyish Tuesday afternoon. It's conveniently located only an hour from Invercargill which we appreciated as we tried to stay in convoy. Upon arrival it was clear Gore is the kind of place where everyone knows everyone, and it's actually a very neat thing. The McCafe Winnebago Cruiser didn't take long to get noticed in Gore, driving down the main street to check out our live location for the next morning. Getting to the end of the main street (drive time: about two minutes), we hit the bit that everyone knows: the huge brown trout. Then another convenient realisation... within 20 metres of the brown trout were three other quintessentially Gore icons. We had the Golden Guitar statue, the impressive Clock Tower, and the Mataura River. It was perfect.
I spent the afternoon conserving energy for the next morning. My producer Kim and I played scrabble, she beat me by over 100 points. If I wasn't such a confident, yet humble person I might have minded... but I let her have that one. It was beginner's luck anyway.
Up at four to write the morning's weather for Gore and it wasn't looking too flash for us, but luckily it held off for the morning and we got through it without getting too wet. It was awesome to have so many locals come down throughout the morning and be part of the show too. From the local ballroom dancing team, to Brendan who volunteered for a fly fishing lesson, to the winner of the 2009 Golden Guitar Award, and everyone in between!
Our next stop is Queenstown... where we'll be doing the whole thing all over again. If you're around be sure to come and join us!
