The Great Coffey Road Trip is back on the road for week two of our six week tour of New Zealand.
We set up camp first thing this morning outside the Oamaru Opera House and luckily it was dark enough for us to see the award-winning lights shining on the building just stunning.
The locals told me that the Opera House is the jewel in Oamarus crown, and it really was. It also provided a spectacular backdrop for all of this mornings crosses.
To our great surprise, the Waitaki District Council managed to block off two-lanes of traffic for us, so the crew from the Penny Farthing Society were able to cycle the streets with me when I trialled the drasiene, a veteran cycle. It wasnt particularly comfortable but I had a good laugh nonetheless.
Local sculpter Ian Anderson kindly brought down some of his
Oamaru stone carvings, and even had two very special gifts; a
mother and baby for Pippa, and a specially-designed tractor just
for Paul.
My favourite cross of the morning was with the lovely ladies from
the Heritage Festival, who all took the time and got up extra early
to don their gorgeous Victorian-inspired gowns. They were all so
lovely, and brought down scones with jam and cream for the
tea-party.
A huge thank you to all the supporters who came down and enjoyed a McCafe coffee from the McCafe Cruiser , and to the staunch rugby supporter who brought down the Lochore Cup for Tamati to show New Zealand!
And now we look forward to hitting South Canterbury - and
meeting lots of Timaruvians on Tuesday.
See you there!
