Gadget Guy Ben Gracewood is expecting an addition to his family later in the year, so being a good geek, he's gone hunting for some hi-tech baby gadgets.

Baby Monitor with LCD Screen and IR Camera
Price: $199

Rating: 3/5
This is a step up from your classic baby monitor: It does video as well as audio. The video is infra-red, so it will work in low light. The monitor works pretty well, but interference can be a problem, so check if you have cordless phones or WiFi on the same frequency.

Blackbox M14 Noise Cancelling Headphones
Price: $379
Product website
Rating: 5/5
Babies are noisy, so you'll need some noise-cancelling headphones. I've been dubious about noise-cancelling headphones before, but the M14s from Blackbox have won me over. Other noise-cancelling headphones seem to be a bit over-the-top with their cancellation input, resulting in muddy sound overall. The M14s on the other hand are crisp and clear. As with all noise-cancelling headphones, they work better with "constant" sounds such as the drone from aircraft engines or office air conditioning. They won't work so well to cancel out baby noises!

Dell Mini 9 Netbook from Vodafone
Price: $75 per month
Product website
Rating: 4/5
When you have a new baby, you'll be up on the couch at all hours of the night. The Dell Mini 9 fits nicely on one knee while you have the baby on the other knee! Netbooks have seemed a little pointless to me before this one: Why not just use a full-sized notebook that doesn't weigh much more? The Mini 9 brings a bit more to the party - built in 3G connectivity and a great price. Just $75/mth on a 24 month contract with 1GB per month, or $90/mth if you want 3GB a month. This is a great netbook for the "road warrior" type who wants a full Windows or Linux platform on the road.
