The Spurs got a balanced effort with six players scoring 10 or more points. Three others scored nine points each while Tony Parker top-scored with 17 points and Manu Ginobili added 16.
All-Star point guard Chris Paul had a game-high 26 points and nine assists for the Hornets, who also received 18 points each from David West and center Emeka Okafor, who added 10 rebounds.
San Antonio are coming off an injury-plagued season in which they failed to advance beyond the first round of the Western Conference playoffs for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.
