The charismatic Shaquille O'Neal challenged Michael Phelps at his own game but was blitzed by the Olympic champion.
The challenge was part of O'Neal's Shaq Vs television show in which he challenges athletes on their own turf.
Shaq raced in a best-of-three series in which Phelps predictably won all three.
In race one, Phelps won the 50m freestyle while Shaq only had to swim 25m. Phelps also won race two (individual medley) and cruised past 'The Diesel' in a 75m freestyle to take race three.
"From now on I'm known as the black Milorad Cavic," he said after the race.
"I celebrated too early - I had it then couldn't finish."
Shaq's penalty for losing the challenge was to put on a pink swimming cap and perform some synchronised swimming.
