New Zealand college basketball star Isaac Fotu has been named the Co-Freshman of the Year in the Big West Conference today.
Fotu, 19, has been a revelation in his first season for the University of Hawaii, sharing Freshman of the Year honors with UC Irvine's Alex Young, and looks like a genuine NBA prospect.
The 6-8 forward, from Auckland's North Shore, grabbed 15 rebounds in his college debut and scored 29 points - one point shy of the University of Hawaii single game freshman record - in just his second Big West contest versus Cal State Fullerton.
Fotu was the league's most accurate shooter in Big West play (63.5% from the floor) and averaged 10.2 points/game and 5.7 rebound/game, the University of Hawaii website said.
He is just the second Rainbow Warrior ever to earn Freshman of the Year honors, joining Dominic Waters (2005-06) who claimed the award in the Western Athletic Conference.
