All-Star guard Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets will have surgery on his left knee this week, the team said on its website on Thursday.

Paul will have arthroscopic surgery for a "meniscal repair" in Florida on Thursday and a date for his return will not be determined until after the surgery.

"Obviously you never want to be in this position to replace a guard like Chris Paul in the middle of the season," Hornets coach Jeff Bower said on the website.

Paul first hurt his knee last week in a game at Golden State and aggravated it further when racing out of bounds to save the ball on Friday against the Chicago Bulls.

Paul, who was recently selected to his third All-Star game, is averaging 20.4 points and 11.2 assists this season for the Hornets, who are 26-22 and one game behind the eighth and last Western Conference berth for the postseason.
