Former NBA star Awvee Storey has touched down in Auckland and completed his first training in a Breakers jersey.
The former Washington Wizard and Milwaukee Buck forward is the club's second American import alongside Rick Rickert.
Hailing from Chicago, the 32-year-old is an athletic, high energy player who will look to take over the court in the upcoming ANBL season. At 6'6" he has played in 60 NBA games.
Joining up with his new team-mates this week, Storey told ONE News on Monday that he is still getting a feel for New Zealand.
"I'm just getting in, everyone's been here for a couple of weeks and have played with each other before. I'm the new kid on the block," he said.
"This is brand new for me and brand new for them. I find that interesting and good to try out. I'm excited overall."
It's all history
Storey has at times made the headlines for the wrong reason.
In 2006 Storey was arrested for disobeying police, and in 2007 a fight at training left one of his team-mates with a fractured skull.
But Storey has learnt a lot since then and says the Breakers don't have to worry about history repeating.
"There are intense moments at times. That was an unfortunate situation and it's behind me.
"They knew [the Breakers] what they were getting with me. I've played in the NBA since that incident so it's all behind us."
Looking for an epic 2009/10 season, Storey can't wait for the first tip-off.
"It's a very physical league, exciting and explosive. Basketball is universal so I should be fine and I'm just excited."
Storey played his most recent basketball in China last year where he averaged 23.3 points and 7.1 rebounds in 44 games for Liaoning.
The Breakers begin their 2009/10 ANBL season against the Cairns Taipans at the North Shore Events Centre on September 24.
