Breakers star BJ Anthony has been suspended for a second booze offence, after turning up to training hungover on Saturday.

Anthony's teammates are reported to have pushed for the suspension, which lasts for ten days, and the decision was supported by coaching staff, including head coach Andrej Lemanis.

"BJ had a big night on the weekend and turned up to training the next day hungover and worse for wear," Breakers executive Richard Clarke told the New Zealand Herald. "He was not in a position to contribute 100% to training."

"The team have decided everyone needs to buy into the expectation that everyone should be contributing 100 per cent every day at training."

The incident is not Anthony's first alcohol-related misdemeanour, after being caught drink-driving on the night of the Rugby World Cup final.

Anthony's Breakers teammate and friend Corey Webster had been released from his contract following a second failed drug test around the time of Anthony's drink-driving incident.

Despite these events, Clarke said drugs and alcohol were not an issue at the club.

"The actions taken by the rest of the team have shown drugs and alcohol are not a problem at the club and if an individual doesn't buy into what the club expects of its players, then they have to deal with the consequences which is what BJ and Corey are dealing with now," Clarke said.
