They saw battle as far back as World War II, but 22 of New Zealand's veterans have had a crash course in soldiering.
The veterans are joining the defence force on its trip to Gallipoli to mark the 95th commemoration of that battle.
They were at Wellington's Trentham Army Camp and one of the veterans, George Butcher says coming back to the camp was a tremendous experience
Things have changed at the camp since Butcher arrived from the war in Korea in the 1950s.
This time around he has got a room all to himself. It is not that flash but at least he is not sharing it with 49 other guys like the last time.
"Well a little bit more luxury...than the olden days," says Butcher.
Butcher, along with 21 other veterans are heading off on a 14-day army trip to Gallipoli for ANZAC Day.
Before that, they first had to spend the weekend at Trentham for a crash course in becoming soldiers again.
The veterans say there is one thing at Trentham that is exactly the same as it was all those years ago - it still has the same grey and red army blankets.
"They haven't changed for maybe hundreds of years," says Butcher.
And after all these years, Butcher says he still remembers precisely how to fold the blankets the army way so he did not need a crash course for that.
