On the eve of the big 2010 World Cup draw, tvnz.co.nz canvassed
the opinions of various All Whites, football experts and television
personalities on what would be their dream draw.
All Whites captain Ryan Nelsen : "I was watching a
1982 recap and I can remember them saying 'We want Brazil - because
if you go to a World Cup you want to experience that'. I completely
disagree - I want the weakest teams possible and hopefully we can
get through.
However, If we played South Africa I would probably get sent off
for 'two footing' [Blackburn team mate] Benni McCarthy. I've warned
him that if we do play them to expect it - the 'Bobsleigh
tackle'."
1982 World Cup captain Steve Sumner : "I would
like to see them play the best teams they possibly can. England
would be interesting for many people back here.
I would like to see them go in with the Ivory Coast - with people
like Didier Drogba it would be an interesting game for our guys and
maybe someone like Portugal. How would we handle Ronaldo? I would
rather see them play against England, Brazil or Argentina than
South Africa who are just not in the same class."
Phoenix striker Paul Ifill : "The three weakest teams they can get so they can progress to the second round. On a personal note, I would like to see them play England but for the boys (in the Phoenix) you have to be looking at the lowest seeding of each group you can get."
All White midfielder Leo Bertos : "It would be nice to face Greece as I have a bit of Greek heritage."
Sports Broadcaster Peter Williams : "France - because we can handle the ball as well as them as we proved in Marseille last week. Brazil - as they have the best looking girls in the stand and even though it is not possible - Australia for the obvious reasons."
New Zealand Football Chairman Frank Van Hattum : "There has been a lot of conjecture about who we may draw but we will take on anyone. However we would like to take a point or a win so obviously that would lean towards getting one of the weakest sides in the group."
TVNZ Weather man Jim Hickey : "South Africa - so we can take revenge for the three losses inflicted by the Springboks this year! Ghana makes great chocolate and Slovenia as there are a lot of Dalmatian people here who might support us."
All White striker Chris Killen : "England. I've played Italy, i've played Spain, i've played Brazil but England is one team I haven't played against."
TV One Breakfast presenter Pippa Wetzell : "Brazil because they are the best team in the world and play great football and Slovenia and Algeria as we might have a chance of beating them."
TV One Breakfast presenter Paul Henry : "Brazil for the same reasons as Pippa, Cameroon as they have a brilliant uniform and any team called the Lions has got to be good and Slovakia because I have heard they are hopeless."

Regardless who NZ get, I am hoping the All Whites are Group G, then I get to see Cape Town, Durban and Port Lizzy - be a great trip around the coast in 3 all new stadiums.

I agree that NZ will get S. Africa the fixed draw, they will be punished for upsetting the hope of ushering in a team from the cash rich but footballing poor middle east.

They may be able to compete with S. Africa and Paraguay, apart from that they'll get gubbed!

Your prediction is impossible - uruguay, Paraguay and Chile cannot be drawn in the same group as Argentina or Brazil, just as none of the African sides can be drawn in South Africa's group. If NZ drew Brazil and Serbia as predicted, the remaining team in the group would be an African side, other than South Africa.
