Winston Reid's last-minute header for the All Whites against Slovakia at the soccer World Cup has been voted New Zealand's favourite sporting moment for 2010.

The award is a new initiative introduced by the Halberg Trust, and was announced at last night's awards dinner in Auckland.

Text and online voting closed at midday yesterday and in a desperately close finish, Reid's dramatic equaliser just edged out the Silver Ferns' dramatic double overtime netball gold medal win over Australia at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games.

From more than 10,000 votes cast, only 200 separated the first and second choice.

A shortlist of eight sporting moments were selected to vote from:

.. Brendon McCullum - 116 not out off 56 balls; Black Caps vs Australia T20, Christchurch

.. Adam Hall - recovers and wins slalom gold; Vancouver Paralympics

.. All Whites - Winston Reid's last minute goal vs Slovakia; FIFA World Cup, South Africa

.. All Blacks - Israel Dagg's last minute try to beat Springboks; Tri Nations, Soweto

.. Nikki Hamblin - late surge for 800m Silver; Delhi Commonwealth Games

.. Silver Ferns - double extra-time victory over Australia for Gold; Delhi Commonwealth Games

.. men's pair - Hamish Bond & Eric Murray win Gold; World Rowing Championships, Karapiro

Kiwis - Nathan Fien's last minute try to beat Australia and win Four Nations; Brisbane

Halberg Trust chief executive Steve Hall said the public response had exceded expectations.

"The feedback we have received has been very positive and we are keen to continue to involve the public in having an input in the awards, around a vote of this nature, in future years."

The criteria was for "the most exciting, remarkable or compelling sporting moment, game or series during 2010 involving New Zealand sporting teams and individuals both at home and abroad".
