All Whites captain Ryan Nelsen has renewed belief New Zealand will be competitive at this year's Football World Cup.

The Blackburn defender was impressed with how the All Whites coped with the 90,000 strong partisan crowd in the international friendly loss to Mexico earlier this month.

Nelsen says while it is hard to predict results, they won't be pushovers in South Africa.

He has gone to a lot of tournaments with New Zealand teams knowing they are going to struggle, but this team is experienced and has good players in key positions.

Nelsen is expecting to have fully recovered from his knee injury within the next fortnight and has targeted the March 28 meeting with Burnley for his Premier League return.
