With an explosive combination of pace and power, Fiji has been a unique force on the world stage.

Considered the pioneers of Sevens rugby, the small Pacific Island nation has won the prestigious Hong Kong tournament more than any other nation and have arguably produced the greatest Sevens player ever in Waisale Serevi.

While the set-piece accuracy of the 15 aside game hasn't suited their Island flair, Fiji has produced two of Rugby World Cup's biggest upsets.

In the inaugural tournament in 1987, a Fijian side who had only played their first Test two years prior, shocked the established world order by beating Argentina 28-9 in their opening Pool match - and thus qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Fast-forward 20 years later and Fiji were at it again when they inflicted more World Cup pain on Wales in their last Pool match to qualify for their second World Cup quarter-final.

Their 38-34 win was considered one of the best matches of the 2007 tournament as they withstood a ferocious Welsh comeback for a famous victory.

In their quarter-final against South Africa, they also put up a good show and at one stage, early in the second half, levelled the scores at 20-20.

The biggest shock in World Cup history looked like it was on the cards until brilliant South African flanker Juan Smith scored a late try to seal the win.

However like many nations, they have always found the might of the All Blacks are bridge too far. In four Tests against New Zealand, since 1987, Fiji have conceded 304 points and scored only 36.

That stat is indicative of the Fijians inclination to run the ball - at all costs - but with a number of their squad now playing in Europe, expect a more competitive performance come July 22.

Fiji Squad: Iliesa Keresoni, Vereniki Goneva, Albert Vulivuli, Ravai Fatiaki, Napolioni Nalaga, Seremaia Bai, Vitori Buatava, Sakiusa Matadigo, Akapusi Qera, Dominiko Waqaniburotu (captain), Sekonaia Kalou, Ifereimi Rawaqa, Deacon Manu, Sunia Koto, Campese Ma'afu. Reserves: Setefano Samoca, Viliame Veikoso, Rupeni Nasiga, Malakai Ravulo, Nemia Ranuku, Taniela Rawaqa, Metuisela Talebula, Timoci Nagusa, Netani Talei (two to be omitted).
