A strong and versatile loose forward, Thomson has long been known
as a turnover specialist for his adopted province of Otago. A
stellar Super 14 season in 2008 earned Thomson a surprise All
Blacks call up and he made his first start on the blindside in the
44-12 demolition of England in Christchurch. He went off the boil
in the 2010 season but a Commonwealth gold medal with the New
Zealand Sevens team in Delhi inspired him to new heights with the
Highlanders in 2011, which culminated in his selection for the All
Blacks' World Cup winning squad. Comfortable on either side of the
scrum, Thomson's versatility makes him an ideal squad player and he
has been an admiral back-up to McCaw when called upon. He scored
his first Test try in the 101-14 win over Samoa in New
Plymouth.
