Not since Graeme Bachop has New Zealand rugby seen a halfback blessed with such a swift and accurate pass. An impressive debut season inside Aaron Cruden for Manawatu in 2009 earned the apprentive hairdresser a call-up to the New Zealand Maori's triumphant 2010 European tour. In 2012, Smith displaced local legend Jimmy Cowan from the Highlanders' starting fifteen without a word of public dissent; his lightning clearances at the base of the ruck pivotal to the southerners' most successful campaign in a decade. Small by modern standards, Smith is nevertheless willing to throw himself into physical confrontations, while his kicking and option taking are also sound. Smith seems set to duel with fellow exciting youngsters Tawera Kerr-Barlow and TJ Perenara for the All Black starting spot for many years to come.
