About Captioning
Captions are just like subtitles on foreign-language films, but they are designed for people with hearing loss. This free service is available on Teletext-enabled TVs and set-top boxes, as well as on all Freeview HD (DTT) TVs and set-top boxes. Captions are available on some programmes on TV ONE, TV2, TV3, FOUR, TV ONE plus 1, TVNZ Heartland and some Sky channels.
For people who have difficulty hearing television, captions help them fill in the gaps, significantly increasing their understanding and enjoyment of programmes. As well as the spoken word, other elements of the audio are transcribed, such as music, sound effects, tone of voice and noises.
Captions also help those learning English, as people are able to watch, listen and read simultaneously.
This service is fully funded by NZ On Air.
