Accessing Captions

On an analogue TV or via Freeview Satellite (DTH)
Using your remote control, press the Text button to display Teletext (this is sometimes represented by the letters 'TXT' or as three horizontal lines) > dial 801 > if the programme has captions, they will begin displaying within 10 seconds.
Via Freeview HD
(DTT)
Using your set-top box remote, press the Subtitle button (this is sometimes represented by the letters 'SUB' or a line of dots at the bottom of a square) > if the programme has captions, they will begin displaying within 10 seconds.
Via IGLOO
- Press Menu > select Settings > Display > set the subtitle language to English
- To turn off, set the subtitle language to ‘Subtitles Off’
Via Tivo
Using your remote, press the Info button > select the ear icon.
Via SKY
Using your remote control, press the Text button to display Teletext > dial 801 > if the programme has captions, they will begin displaying within 10 seconds.
Via MySKY HDi
Using your remote, press Menu > select Setup > Closed Captions On
Which channels have captions?
It depends which platform you are accessing television on.
Analogue: captions offered on TV ONE, TV2, TV3.
Freeview HD (DTT): captions offered on TV ONE, TV2, TV ONE plus 1, TV3, TV3 +1 and FOUR.
Freeview Satellite (DTH): captions offered on TV ONE, TV2, TV ONE plus 1, TV3, TV3 +1 and FOUR.
IGLOO: captions offered on TV ONE, TV2, TV ONE plus 1, TVNZ Heartland and on TV3, TV3 +1, FOUR and some Sky channels.
SKY: captions offered on the following channels: TV ONE, TV2, TV ONE plus 1, TVNZ Heartland and on TV3, TV3 +1, FOUR and some Sky channels.
MySKY HDi: captions offered on the following channels: TV ONE, TV2, TV ONE plus 1, TVNZ Heartland, TV3, TV3 +1, FOUR and on some Sky channels.
TiVo: TV ONE, TV2, TV ONE plus 1, TV3, TV3 +1 and FOUR.

TV Guide to see which programmes have captions. Look for the ear symbol.
Print Publications
The Listener (indicated by a black square), TV Guide (indicated by a black dot) and the NZ Herald (indicated by 'T')
Ear symbol
Captioned programmes are also indicated by the ear symbol at the beginning of the programme.
Electronic programme guide on Freeview set-top boxes
Press the EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) button on your set-top-box remote. Scroll through the programmes, and at the bottom of the synopsis for each programme there will be an ear symbol if the programme is captioned.
