2010 World Cup qualifying campaign:
Dark horses Serbia beat out France Austria, Lithuania, Romania and Faroe Islands and qualified for South Africa after topping their Group. France also qualified in by a play-off against Northern Ireland.

As Serbia Montenegro:
Germany (2006) - placed last in their Group (behind Argentina, Netherlands and Ivory Coast) and failed to progress to the second round

As part of Yugoslavia (prior to independence in 2003):
Yugoslavia has appeared at 9 World Cups - most recently in France 98 where they reached the second round, but where knocked out by a 2-1 loss to the Netherlands.

The also reached the World Cup finals held in Italy in 1990 where they reached the quarter finals, only to lose out to Argentina.

Yugoslavia's highest place was reaching the semi finals of the 1962 World Cup held in Chile, where they lost to Czechoslovakia, and finished in fourth place behind Chile.
