World Cup history:
2010 South Africa will be Germany's 17th World Cup appearance.  They have twice hosted the Cup first in 1974 and in 2006. Germany was banned from the 1950 Cup in Brazil following WWII.

Germany (or West Germany) have won the Cup three times (1990, 1974, 1954) been runners up four times (2002, 1986, 1982, 1966) and Third place in 1934 and 2006.

In 2006 (Germany) the host nation went down to Italy 2-0 in extra time to be knocked out of the Semi Finals. Germany played Portugal for Third Place, winning 3-1. In 2002 (Korea/Japan) Germany made the final but lost 2-0 to Brazil
