A prediction of Spanish victory by Paul the psychic octopus has been revealed as a Photoshop fake.

Paul, who resides at the Sea Life Aquarium in Oberhauser in Germany, has generated worldwide interest with his, thus far, accurate predictions on the outcomes of German matches at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The story which hit the internet yesterday included an image showing Paul making his pick for Spain by selecting food from the container labelled with the Spanish flag. However the picture was seen to be a modified version from Paul's earlier prediction of a German group round loss to Serbia, with the flag replaced.

Paul's predictions have correctly foretold the Germans' quarter final victory over Argentina, their second round win over England, as well as group round wins over Australia and Ghana and a loss to Serbia.

The real Paul is not expected to make his pick until Tuesday night (NZT).
