Adam Sandler stars as an average joe who strikes in rich in this loose remake of the 1936 Frank Capra classic Mr. Deeds Goes To Town.
Sandler plays the titular small town pizza restaurant owner (and
aspirational greeting card writer) who one day unexpectedly
inherits $40 billion from an uncle he barely knew.
This includes his late uncle's media empire, which Deeds comes to
New York to run.
He gets an odd butler in the form of Emilio (John Turturro), who
does know how to respond to Deeds' unexpected kindness toward
him.
And there is of course a nefarious corporate type up to no good
played by The OC's Peter Gallagher.
Tabloid reporter Babe Bennett (Winona Ryder) is anxious to get
the scoop on the unknown heir and pretends to be a small town gal
to win him over.
But her plan works all too well and Deeds falls head over heels in
love with her.
Mr. Deeds doesn't stray far from the Sandler formula - he plays a down to earth everyman with slightly slobbish tendencies that conflict with the snobs around him.
Mr. Deeds was Ryder's first release following her arrest for
shoplifting, and consequently much of the press around the film
focused on her troubles.
But that didn't stop Mr. Deeds from becoming yet another Adam
Sandler smash hit, making over $125 million at the US domestic box
office.
